What inventory management system means
An inventory management system tracks what stock you hold, where it is, and how it moves. Custom development matters when a business has multiple locations, batch or serial traceability requirements, or unit conversions and costing rules that packaged products handle only approximately.

Inventory Management System: common questions
Should we build custom or use packaged inventory software?
Packaged software is cheaper and often sufficient — if your items, units and locations fit its model. Custom earns its cost with unusual unit conversions, complex batch requirements, or when inventory is tightly bound to a manufacturing process the product does not understand. We will recommend a package where one fits.
Can it work offline?
The capture screens can, which matters in warehouses with poor signal. Movements queue locally and sync when connectivity returns, with conflict handling for the rare case where two devices record against the same stock. We design for this when your environment needs it.
Does it integrate with Tally or our accounting system?
Yes, and it should — inventory valuation has to reconcile to your books or you will maintain two sets of numbers. Depending on the system this is a direct integration or a scheduled export, which we assess during discovery.
How do we handle stock that is already wrong?
With a full physical count before going live. It is disruptive and it is not optional. Starting a new system from known-wrong balances means every variance afterwards is ambiguous, and staff conclude within weeks that the system cannot be trusted.
Can it manage stock across our shop and website?
Yes, with one location as authoritative and the website syncing from it. How often depends on movement speed. Overselling online is nearly always a sync design decision rather than an unavoidable consequence of selling in two places.
How long does implementation take?
Typically two to four months depending on the number of locations and how much integration is needed, plus the count before go-live. Item data cleanup is usually the largest hidden task — most businesses discover their item master has duplicates and inconsistent units.
