What website design & development means

Website design and development covers planning, designing, building and launching a business website. Done properly it also includes the technical foundations that decide whether the site ever ranks: performance, crawlability, structured data, analytics and a content structure search engines can follow.

A website is usually bought as a design and judged as a business asset. That gap is where most disappointment lives — the site looks like the mockup, and eighteen months later it has produced almost no enquiries. Nothing went wrong exactly; nothing was ever built to go right. Nobody decided which searches it should answer, what a visitor needed to see before making contact, or how quickly it had to load on a phone on mobile data.

We treat those as part of the build rather than as a later project. The page structure follows the searches you want to appear for. Speed budgets are set before design, not measured after. Analytics and conversion tracking are wired at launch, so month one produces data rather than opinions.

Scope

What's included

Structure and page plan

The sitemap derived from what your buyers search for and need to know, so each page has one job and one primary query rather than competing with its neighbours.

Design

A design system rather than a set of pictures — type scale, spacing, components — so pages added next year still look like the site.

Build

Engineered for speed on mid-range phones and slow connections, which is what most of your traffic is actually using.

Technical SEO foundations

Clean URLs, correct heading hierarchy, metadata, structured data, XML sitemap, robots rules and canonical tags, all in place at launch.

Analytics and conversion tracking

Enquiry forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks tracked from day one, so you can tell which pages produce business.

Editing and handover

A way for your team to change content without needing us, and documentation of how the site is put together.

How we work

The process, step by step

  1. 01

    Discovery and search research

We establish who buys from you, what they search, and what they need to see before they make contact. This produces the page plan, and it is the difference between a site built on evidence and one built on preference.

  2. 02

    Structure and wireframes

Page structure and layout agreed before any visual design. Arguing about a wireframe is fast; arguing about a finished design is expensive and tends to be about the wrong things.

  3. 03

    Design system

Components and styles defined once so the site is consistent and extensible, rather than a set of individually designed pages that drift apart.

  4. 04

    Build and performance

Developed against a performance budget, tested on real device and connection conditions rather than a developer's laptop.

  5. 05

    Pre-launch technical check

Crawl, redirects, metadata, structured data, accessibility and speed all verified before launch. A redirect map is prepared if the site is replacing an existing one, because this is where rankings are most often lost.

  6. 06

    Launch and first-month review

Live, submitted to Search Console, then reviewed after a few weeks against real behaviour — where people land, where they leave, what they click.

Where it fits

Who this is for

B2B and manufacturing

Sites where the buying decision is long and technical, and the job is to answer specification questions before a call.

Professional services

Where credibility does the selling: clear service pages, proof, and a contact path that does not make people work.

Replacing an ageing site

Rebuilds where existing rankings must be carried over, which makes the redirect and URL work as important as the design.

Campaign and landing pages

Pages built to convert paid traffic, measured properly, and kept out of the way of the organic site's structure.

How we approach it differently

  • Speed is a requirement, not a reportPerformance budgets are set before design and tested on real conditions, not measured apologetically after launch.
  • Structure follows searchThe page plan comes from what people actually search for, so pages do not compete with each other for the same query.
  • Rebuilds keep their rankingsRedirect mapping and URL continuity are treated as launch-blocking work, because that is where rebuilds usually lose traffic.
  • Measured from day oneTracking is wired at launch, so the first month produces evidence rather than impressions.

FAQs

Website Design & Development: common questions

How much does a website cost?

It depends mostly on the number of unique page types, how much content has to be written, and whether anything has to integrate with your existing systems. A brochure site with a handful of templates is a very different project from one with a product catalogue and a customer login. We give a fixed-scope figure after a short discovery call rather than a number before understanding the scope.

WordPress or a custom build?

WordPress makes sense when frequent non-technical editing matters most and requirements are conventional. A modern static or framework build is usually faster, cheaper to host and more secure, at the cost of slightly less freeform editing. We recommend based on who will maintain it and how often, not on which we prefer to build.

Will a new site hurt our current rankings?

It can, and this is the single most common way rebuilds go wrong. If URLs change without a redirect map, the equity built up on the old addresses is lost. We treat redirect mapping and URL continuity as launch-blocking work and monitor Search Console closely for the first weeks after launch.

How long does a website take?

For a typical business site, a few weeks to a couple of months, and the largest variable is usually content. Design and build run to a schedule; waiting for copy, product information and photographs is what extends projects. We plan content deadlines alongside build milestones for that reason.

Can we edit it ourselves afterwards?

Yes — how freely depends on the platform chosen, which is part of the recommendation. We hand over with editing access and documentation. A site you cannot update without a purchase order becomes a site that does not get updated.

Do you write the content?

We can, and for search-driven pages we usually should, because the structure and the words are the same decision. Where you have subject expertise in-house, the most efficient arrangement is often that you supply the substance and we shape it for search and readability.
