Volume, Difficulty & Competition

Beginner 8 min read Lesson 6 of 31

Not every keyword is worth targeting. Three metrics help you choose wisely: search volume, keyword difficulty and competition.

The three metrics

  • Search volume — how many times a keyword is searched per month.
  • Keyword difficulty (KD) — an estimate of how hard it is to rank, based on the strength of pages already ranking.
  • Competition — how many others target it, and how strong they are.

Finding the sweet spot

The best beginner keywords have decent volume, low difficulty and clear intent. A keyword with 200 searches you can actually rank for beats one with 20,000 you never will.

Pro tips

  • Use free tools like Google Keyword Planner and Search Console to start.
  • For a new site, aim for KD under 20 to 30.
  • Group similar keywords into one page instead of one page per keyword.

Common mistakes

  • Only chasing the highest-volume keywords.
  • Ignoring difficulty and wondering why nothing ranks.
  • Creating thin pages for tiny keyword variations.
Summary

Judge keywords by search volume, difficulty and competition. The sweet spot is realistic difficulty with clear intent — winnable traffic beats unreachable traffic.
